Personal Accident Insurance: What Does It Cover?
The Numbers Nobody Wants to Read: Road Accidents in India, and What a Cover Actually Does
MoRTH’s 2024 report records 4,87,707 road accidents in India. 1,77,175 deaths. 4,71,441 injuries.
Broken into daily terms: 1,336 accidents a day. 485 deaths a day. Nearly 20 deaths every hour.
The crashes are becoming deadlier. Deaths per 100 accidents moved from 21.6 in 2005 to 36.3 in 2024. The story isn’t only about how many accidents happen. It is also about how often those accidents end in a death.
Over-speeding accounts for 70.3% of road deaths. Two out of three deaths are among people aged 18-45. The broader 18-60 age group accounts for 83.3%. These aren’t distant statistics. They are the commuters. The earners. The people whose ability to work keeps a household moving.

What the Hospital Bill Hides
A road accident can create two very different financial pressures.
- The medical bill. ICU charges, surgery, physiotherapy and other eligible treatment expenses. Health insurance is designed primarily to cover these, subject to the policy’s terms and limits.
- The income gap. No line item, no discharge summary. Just the money that stops coming in when you can’t work, and may take time to return.
A salaried employee on leave without pay can see that gap directly. A self-employed person, a driver, a shop owner, a freelancer, can feel it even faster: no employer buffer, no paid leave to fall back on.
The hospital bill may have an amount printed on it. The income loss doesn’t.
EMIs don’t pause for recovery time. Rent doesn’t. School fees don’t. A health policy can cover eligible medical expenses, including certain pre- and post-hospitalisation costs depending on the policy. But it isn’t designed to replace the income you lose while you’re unable to work.

What Personal Accident Cover Actually Does
Personal Accident cover pays benefits when an accident results in covered injury, disability or death. The exact benefits depend on the policy.
| Benefit | What it pays | Trigger |
| Accidental Death Benefit | Lump sum to nominee | Death caused by a covered accident |
| Permanent Total Disability | Lump sum, typically up to the full sum insured | Defined permanent total disablement caused by an accident |
| Permanent Partial Disability | Percentage payout, based on policy terms | Defined permanent partial disablement caused by an accident |
| Temporary Total Disability | Weekly or monthly benefit, if included | Defined period of complete inability to work due to an accident |
| Add-ons (plan-dependent) | Fixed amount or reimbursement | Benefits such as children’s education, ambulance or funeral expenses |
What it Generally Doesn’t Cover
- Illness or conditions unrelated to a covered accident
- Natural death
- Intentional self-injury, suicide or attempted suicide, subject to policy terms
- Death or injury arising in circumstances excluded by the policy, including certain cases involving intoxication
- Specified hazardous or adventure activities where excluded by the policy
The exact exclusions vary by insurer and product, so the policy wording matters.

The Gap It’s Built For
A health policy is primarily designed around eligible medical expenses. Personal Accident cover can address a different part of the financial impact of an accident.
If a policy includes Temporary Total Disability, it can provide a defined benefit for the period you’re unable to work. If an accident causes permanent disability, the policy can pay a lump sum according to the applicable disability benefit.
It isn’t necessarily a replacement for your salary. It is a defined insurance benefit designed around the consequences of an accident.
The distinction matters. One cover can help with the cost of getting treated. The other can help cushion the financial consequences of what the accident does to your ability to earn.
