| CoverSure’s Policy Health Check is an expert review of your health insurance policy across 30+ parameters, delivered as a simple report with actionable insights and access to an IRDAI-certified advisor. It is priced at ₹99 (listed as worth ₹499) at the time of writing. It saves money in four ways: it catches claim-shrinking clauses (co-pay, room rent limits, sub-limits, consumables exclusions, long waiting periods) before a hospital bill does; it points to cheap fixes like riders instead of expensive new policies; it flags overlaps and add-ons you may be paying for without needing; and it helps you decide whether to renew, upgrade or port before you pay the next premium. A single avoided deduction on one claim can be worth hundreds of times the fee. |
The most expensive health policy is the one you don’t understand
Every year, millions of Indians renew their health insurance the same way: an SMS arrives, a payment link is clicked, and the policy rolls over for another twelve months. Nobody asks whether it’s still the right policy. After all, it’s “working”, in the sense that nobody has claimed yet.
Then a claim happens, and the policy reveals its personality. A 10% co-pay here. A room rent cap there. A sub-limit on the exact surgery your father needs. A consumables bill the insurer won’t touch. The premium was paid in full; the claim is paid in part.
Here’s the frustrating bit: almost every one of those surprises was sitting in the policy wording on day one. It just needed someone to read it properly and tell you what to do about it.
That’s the job of the Policy Health Check. This blog explains what it looks at, how it saves money (with maths), and when to use it.

Why it’s a money saver: 4 ways, with numbers
All figures are hypothetical and for illustration.
Money saver #1: It catches claim-shrinking clauses before a claim does
Ramesh, 44, Chennai. ₹5 lakh policy with a 1% room rent cap (₹5,000/day), proportionate deduction clause and 10% co-pay.
The Health Check flags both. Suppose that in the next year he has a ₹4,00,000 hospitalisation in an ₹8,000/day room for 5 days:
| Bill head | Billed | Payable without fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Room rent | ₹40,000 | ₹25,000 |
| Associated charges | ₹2,20,000 | ₹1,37,500 (62.5%) |
| Medicines and implants | ₹1,40,000 | ₹1,40,000 |
| Subtotal | ₹4,00,000 | ₹3,02,500 |
| Less 10% co-pay | -₹30,250 | |
| Insurer pays | ₹2,72,250 |
Out of pocket without fixes: ₹1,27,750.
After the check, Ramesh adds a room rent waiver and a co-pay waiver at renewal (assume ₹4,000 extra premium). Payable: close to ₹4,00,000, subject to other terms. Money saved on one claim: about ₹1,27,750. Cost: ₹99 + ₹4,000.
Money saver #2: It tells you when a cheap fix beats an expensive switch
Many people react to a scary clause by buying a whole new policy, losing waiting-period credit or paying a much higher premium. The check helps you compare:
| Option | Extra annual cost (hypothetical) | Keeps waiting-period credit? |
|---|---|---|
| Add a room rent waiver rider | ₹2,500 | Yes |
| Add a super top-up for large bills | ₹4,500 | Existing base credit stays; the top-up has its own waits |
| Buy a brand-new comprehensive policy | ₹14,000 | New waiting periods, unless ported |
| Port to a better plan at renewal | Varies | Yes, per IRDAI portability rules |
Picking the right fix instead of the most dramatic one can save thousands a year.
Money saver #3: It spots what you’re paying for but may not need
- An OPD add-on while your employer already covers OPD generously
- A personal accident rider duplicating a standalone PA policy
- Very high sum insured on a parent’s policy while your own is too low
- A maternity add-on when you’re not planning a family in the relevant window
Hypothetical: dropping two overlapping add-ons worth ₹3,000 and ₹2,200 a year saves ₹5,200 annually, or about ₹26,000 over five years, before premium increases.
Money saver #4: It helps you renew, upgrade, or port at the right time
The best time to fix a policy is before renewal. Change mid-year, and you may not be able to; wait too long, and you pay another year’s premium for a weak policy. The check is designed for exactly that window.
The expected-value view
Say there’s a 1-in-10 chance your family has a hospitalisation this year (a purely illustrative number, not a statistic), and a fixable clause would cost you ₹1,27,750 on that claim.
- Expected saving: 0.10 x ₹1,27,750 = about ₹12,775 a year
- Cost of the check: ₹99
Even with generous assumptions against it, the check pays for itself many times over.
How does it work?
- Go to policycheck.coversure.in and select your insurer (or “Other”).
- Share your policy details as prompted.
- Pay the fee.
- Receive a simple-language report with insights.
- Speak with an IRDAI-certified advisor if you want help acting on it.
When should you use it?
- 30 to 45 days before renewal: enough time to add riders, upgrade or port
- Before buying a new policy: check the policy you’re about to buy, not just the one you have
- When a parent turns 60, or a family member is diagnosed with a condition
- After a job change: see how your personal policy holds up without corporate cover
- After a claim surprise: understand what went wrong and fix it for next time
