| Rajiv Aarogyasri is Telangana’s state health scheme for low-income families. It began in 2007 in undivided Andhra Pradesh and continues in Telangana through the Aarogyasri Health Care Trust. In December 2023, the Telangana government raised the cover from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh per family per year. As of mid-2024, the scheme covered 1,672 medical procedures through about 1,402 hospitals in the state, after the government added new procedures and revised package rates. Treatment is cashless at empanelled government and private hospitals. Eligibility is linked mainly to white ration card or food security card holders, so families need a valid card to use it. The scheme is fully state-funded, with no premium. It pays defined packages rather than any hospital bill, so it works best as a strong base layer. |
Rajiv Aarogyasri at ₹10 Lakh: How Telangana’s Health Scheme Works, Who Gets It, and Where to Plan Beyond It
Hyderabad has world-class hospitals. Aarogyasri decides who can afford them.
Hyderabad is often called a medical hub. Patients fly in from other states, and even other countries, for heart surgeries and transplants.
For a low-income family in Warangal or Nizamabad, that same skyline can feel very far away. Rajiv Aarogyasri exists to close that distance. And since December 2023, it closes it with ₹10 lakh a year per family.
The scheme also has one of the longest histories of any in India. It started in 2007 and became a model other states copied.
Here’s how it works today, who qualifies, and what to think about beyond it.

Aarogyasri in Telangana, in plain words
Rajiv Aarogyasri pays for serious, defined treatments for eligible families, cashless, at empanelled hospitals. The Telangana government funds it.
The key numbers:
- ₹10 lakh per family per year, raised from ₹5 lakh in December 2023.
- 1,672 procedures on the list as of mid-2024, after the state added 65 new ones, including some angiogram, Parkinson’s and spinal procedures.
- About 1,402 hospitals in the network, as reported in 2024.
- Package rates revised for 1,375 procedures in 2024 to keep hospitals participating.
One thing to understand early: Aarogyasri is package-based. The ₹10 lakh is a ceiling for listed procedures, not a blank cheque for any bill.

From ration card to cashless treatment
- Check your card. Eligibility is linked to your white ration card or food security card (FSC). Make sure it’s valid and every family member is listed.
- Search your status. Use the official Aarogyasri portal or your local health centre to confirm your family is in the system.
- Pick a network hospital. The official site lists empanelled hospitals. Check before planned treatment.
- Visit the Aarogyasri desk. At admission, go to the scheme help desk with your card and Aadhaar.
- Let the hospital request approval. The hospital seeks pre-authorisation for your procedure.
- Get treated cashless. Covered procedures are paid directly by the scheme.

Four things worth knowing before admission day
Your ration card is your ticket. If a new member isn’t on the card, they may not be covered. Update the card early.
₹10 lakh is a ceiling, not a guarantee. Each procedure has a package amount. A treatment not on the list won’t be covered, even if the family limit is untouched.
The network is big, not total. About 1,400 hospitals is a lot, but your preferred private hospital may not be one of them.
OPD and long-term medicines sit mostly outside. Aarogyasri focuses on listed procedures and admissions.
| Renewing a private plan on autopilot? A Policy Health Check reviews it across 30+ parameters for ₹99 and benchmarks it against 1,500+ plans. Continue, upgrade, top up or port: you’ll know which one makes sense for your life today. |

Aarogyasri vs a private health plan
Aarogyasri gives low-income families access to the same advanced hospitals that draw patients from across India. A private plan gives anyone flexibility, at a price.
What Aarogyasri does well
- ₹10 lakh per family per year, double the old limit.
- 1,672 procedures, including high-cost specialities.
- Large hospital network across the state.
- Zero premium for eligible families.
Where a private plan typically adds more
- No ration card needed. Eligibility depends on the insurer’s health and age rules, not income.
- Actual bills paid, subject to policy terms, rather than package rates.
- Room choice, restoration, cumulative bonus and optional add-ons.
- Hospitals across India, including for family members who’ve moved away.
- Your own contract. Scheme limits and lists can change with government decisions.
For eligible families, Aarogyasri is the foundation. For everyone else, and for those who want more choice, a private plan or super top-up builds on it.
When the ₹10 lakh meets real life
For most families, ₹10 lakh will cover a very bad year. The gaps tend to show up around eligibility and access rather than the amount.
Meet the Raos (a hypothetical family; numbers are illustrative). They live in Warangal, with a daughter in Bengaluru.
| Situation (hypothetical) | Covered by Aarogyasri? |
|---|---|
| Father’s bypass surgery at an empanelled hospital, ₹4 lakh | Yes, within the package |
| Mother’s long-term diabetes medicines and OPD visits | Mostly outside the scheme |
| Grandson’s surgery that isn’t on the procedure list | No |
| Daughter’s emergency in Bengaluru | Not under Telangana’s network |
That’s why it helps to know your number, not just your scheme.
