What is the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme?

Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme
QUICK GIST
The Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS) started on 1 April 2025 and is designed to cover every family in Mizoram, aligned with Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY. General families choose a yearly contribution based on the ward they want: ₹2,500 for a general ward, ₹5,000 for semi-private and ₹10,000 for private, each with cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year. Families already under PM-JAY pay nothing. Government employees, including contractual and muster-roll staff, pay ₹200 to ₹1,500 a month from their salary for unlimited cover. Civil pensioners are also included, with contributions and cover depending on their category. MUHCS 2.0 began on 1 April 2026; registration for 2026-27 opened on 16 February 2026. Treatment is cashless at state health facilities and empanelled private and church-run hospitals, with referrals outside Mizoram where needed.

MUHCS Mizoram: Choose Your Ward, Pay Once a Year, Get ₹5 Lakh of Cover

A universal scheme with a menu

Most state schemes in this series are either free for a defined group or universal and free. Mizoram’s is universal, but most families pay a small yearly contribution, and the amount depends on the comfort you want in hospital.

General ward, semi-private or private: each plan gives up to ₹5 lakh of cover. Families on Ayushman Bharat get in free, and government staff pay through their salary.

It’s a different model, and it has had growing pains since its 2025 start. Here’s how it works now, after the 2026 update.

Worth knowing

Miss the window, risk a gap. MUHCS runs on a yearly registration cycle. Mark the dates.

Your plan decides your ward, not your cover. All three general plans offer ₹5 lakh; the difference is room type.

Check which hospitals are in. The empanelled list, especially for private hospitals inside Mizoram, has changed since launch. Confirm before planned treatment.

Some services may be excluded. Reports at launch said some routine maternity care wasn’t covered. Check the current benefit list.

Paying for MUHCS every year and a private plan too? A Policy Health Check reviews your private policy across 30+ parameters for ₹99, against 1,500+ plans. See if it still adds value.

MUHCS renews yearly. So do your car and health policies. Add your state scheme to your CoverSure insurance portfolio and get reminders for all of them. Turn on Family Share so family can see which plan you paid for.

MUHCS vs a private plan

What MUHCS does well

  • Covers every family through one of several routes.
  • Low yearly contribution for ₹5 lakh of cover.
  • Free for PM-JAY families.
  • Unlimited cover for government staff, through salary deductions.
  • Out-of-state referrals with empanelled hospitals beyond Mizoram.

Where a private plan usually adds more

  • Wider choice of private hospitals, without referral rules.
  • Higher sums insured for non-employee families.
  • Restoration, cumulative bonus and 80D tax benefit (old regime; please verify limits).

When the hospital you want isn’t on the list

Meet the Lalrinsangas (a hypothetical family on the ₹2,500 general plan; numbers are illustrative). They live in Lunglei.

Event (hypothetical) Covered?
Son’s appendix surgery at an empanelled facility, ₹70,000 Yes, general ward
Mother’s cancer treatment after referral to an empanelled hospital outside Mizoram, ₹3.5 lakh Yes, if referred under scheme rules
Preference for a non-empanelled private hospital in Aizawl No
